Welcome to our home-school page!
We've been home-schooling since 2006 and will most likely never return to the "brick & mortar" schools. Why did I make this choice? I simply wanted my children to have a better education than they were getting in our local public school. We live in a small town (pop. approx 35,000) and the education department just doesn't see our children as people who need a good base to grow from.
Once we started home-based education, dozens of opportunities opened up. All of a sudden, my daughter liked to read and now I find it challenging to get her nose out of her books. My son has had more time to build computers from spare parts and explore that aspect of his interests. We've all been learning the Spanish courses they have available. Instead of fretting about perfect attendance, we focus on the cool things we can all learn.
The first year, we actually used two different online schools - Buckeye Online Schools for Success for my son (AK); and Ohio Virtual Academy for my daughter(BJ). They are both great programs, but in 2007 we chose to transfer AK to OHVA. It si slightly more regimented, and that helps AK stay on task. (He is, after all, a 16yo boy who would rather put off what isn't required to get done right now.)
